This week, I received my favorite compliment as a professional marketer and writer.

I was invited to speak on a panel at Pavilion’s San Diego chapter event in La Jolla, CA (the fancy part of town).

My friend and chapter head, Andrew Hahn, introduced me and said (from memory), “I look forward to Devin’s newsletter every weekend… because he has the best email subject lines…So good that I often steal them and use them for my sales team.”

Waves of satisfaction.

I imagine it’s my version of “compliments to the chef.”

I love hearing this because it reminds me that I’m a “welcome guest,” someone they invited over. Someone their eager to spend time with. When they love my subject line – and take the time to tell me – it means that I’m earning my keep.

I’m not noise. I’m anticipated.

And that’s not given. And it can’t be bought.

It’s earned.

The old-fashioned way:

Showing up week after week, and month after month, and year after year after year, giving my list (you) everything that I have.

The compliment is proof it landed, and it mattered.

Doesn’t get any better than that.

Helping people, that is.

Anyone who keeps, reads, and devours my email content… and takes time to bask in a subject line’s worth… these are my “close friends” in my audience.

Other craftsmen — er, craftspeople — who love the details.

Who love writing, complaining about writing, struggling with writing — or “wrestling with words” — as I call it.

That’s my Why. To help them.

And since thou shall always write great copy….

And you probably wrote at least one email yesterday…

And you’re wondering where these ellipses lead and if they’ll be worth it…

I have a real treat.

Here are my top 5 most opened email subject lines of 2025.

I don’t advise “stealing” them. That’s a felony in these parts. A real no-no.

Andrew gets a pass because that's internal use.

But you can (and should) study them.

Understand why they work on you, or don’t work on you.

Rewrite them with your topics, for your audience.

I guess what I’m trying to say is:

Don’t run away from the work.

Now allow me to “open up the books” so you can see it all.

But this tactic has a know-before-you-go label:

These top emails also have higher-than-average unsubscribe rates.

Why:

There’s a lot of “Devin” in those words. Open ‘em up and there’s no doubt who it’s from. I tell “big stories” my way. And I know that’s not for everyone. So people jumping ship isn’t surprising. And it doesn’t bother me or steal an ounce of sleep because

I only want people on my list that I can help.

And if they decide I can’t, then good.

Elite marketing is about attracting the right people and repelling the wrong ones.

I lean into that heavily.

Because “my style” is the same reason thousands of people on this list have been with me for years. Many since the first edition.

One last thing.
