Being good at your job does not guarantee a long, successful career.
In fact, the biggest career myth is: work hard, and you'll be promoted.
Throughout my 12 years in corporate life, I've had great jobs and sh*tty ones.
I've been laid off and promoted. I've had fun and been miserable.
The difference wasn't effort. It was where — and when — I was working.
Sure, sometimes "grinding it out" works. Often, it doesn't. Because effort doesn't protect us from layoffs, budget cuts, and headcount freezes.
In my experience, the happiest professionals are bought in, eager to open their laptops, and get a dopamine rush when they ship good work.
I experienced this for the first time at Gong.
It wasn't luck or divine intervention. It worked because the product was undeniable, leadership backed marketing, and the market was ready. That combo became the "springboard" that accelerated my career.
It helped me realize that to be happy and love my job I need...
To be the right player on the right team at the right time.
That's not the same as qualified or "a good culture fit."
Here's what I mean:
- Right player: Your strengths are obvious without you forcing them
- Right team: Leadership sees your value and equips you to use it
- Right time: The company has undeniable momentum, not “potential”
When any one of those is missing, work becomes death by a million Slacks.
My goal this month is to help you find your "best job ever."
